A request from Dave Jordan, AA4KN for some help he needs with a Seminole Co. Public Schools (SCPS) Teach-In....
++++++++
Hello LMARS members,
Each year in November, our members are invited to participate in the Seminole Co. Public Schools (SCPS) Teach-In. This is an event where LMARS engages with English Estates Elementary School in Fern Park to share with students this amazing Ham Radio hobby that we all enjoy. This is one of our ways of reaching out to our community’s youth and to hopefully spark their interest in becoming ham operators themselves.
This year Teach-In will be held on Tuesday, November 12. So for members that would like to join in, we’ll meet at English Estates Elementary between 8:15 and 8:30 am for check in and to set up any radio equipment we choose to bring with us. Between 9 am and 11 am, we’ll meet with four separate classes usually made up of 3rd and 4th graders for 30 minutes each. During these 30 minute sessions, we’ll take turns sharing what our particular interest is in operating ham radios. Bring equipment along to show them how it’s used and possibly do a demonstration. A few examples are, bringing an HT along and arranging for a contact over one of our repeaters and letting a few kids have a turn talking too. If your interest is HF operation, consider recording an HF QSO you’ve had with a U.S. or DX station and play it for the class, etc. Each presenter will be allowed 10 minutes to share with the class.
Teach-In opportunities like this help to ensure the future of amateur radio, help to promote STEM initiatives in our education systems and are really a lot of fun to do.
If you do decide to participate, you are required to register as a Dividend with SCPS before you will be allowed on campus. Registration does not take very long to do and you can register by going online to https://www.scps.k12.fl.us/cms/one.aspx?portalId=1854109&pageId=2057797
If you would like to join in with us for this event, please email me at n4csitwo@bellsouth.net and include your name, call sign, phone number and explain what you would like to share with the students and what equipment you plan to bring along.
The school address is 299 Oxford Rd, Fern Park, FL 32730. Their phone number is 407-746-2850 (from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm)
Thank you all and I look forward to hearing from you.
